Read This Before You Buy Your Smart Doorbell

by Brett Decker

Smart doorbells are at the forefront of smart home innovation. With many of the top brands, like Ring and Nest offering both wired and wire-free connectivity, many people are asking: Which is the better choice for me?

There are a few things to consider here, so let’s take a look.

What’s the best part of having a wired connection?

You don’t have to worry about running out of power. Let’s say you live in an area that has a lot of people walking by. If you don't use a wired connection, and your camera is always recording clips, your battery will quickly lose its juice.

With a wired connection, you never run out of power because your camera receives a continuous charge from your home’s main power source.

What’s the downside?

It’s WAY more labor-intensive. If you decide to hardwire your smart doorbell to your main power supply, it could take a long time.

A lot of people just hire an electrician to do the dangerous and detailed work - and we all know that a good electrician can really cost you nowadays. Aside from that, a wired connection might also put certain limitations on exactly where you can install your doorbell.

Why should I use a wire-free connection?

For starters, easy installation. You completely eliminate the headache and hard work of wiring your doorbell to your house. Installation is quick and can be done by anyone - within minutes.

It’s also just smarter smart tech. When I think of smart devices like cameras, doorbells, and speakers, I think of wire-free connectivity — don't you?

Is there a downside to wire-free?

Yes, there sure is. As mentioned above, wire-free drains your battery quickly. You will constantly need to be recharging it. Which means more maintenance AND more downtime. You simply won’t be getting the most out of your smart home investment.

Then what should I do?

Fortunately, we have the perfect solution: solar energy

If you’re leaning towards the Google Nest (battery), take a look at our Google Nest (battery) and Solar Panel Bundle. It allows you to enjoy the ease and convenience of wire-free connectivity, with the peace of mind of knowing your batteries are staying charged. Truly the best of both worlds.

You just install the solar panel nearby, and run one thin, basic cable to your Google Nest (battery). That’s all there is to it.

You don’t need to worry about bad weather either. Made from polycrystalline silicon, these solar panels are tough. They continue charging your Google Nest (battery), even in poor weather conditions.

Or you can check out our Ring Video Doorbell 4 and Solar Charger Mount Bundle. It keeps your Ring Doorbell completely charged, allowing for the best possible smart doorbell experience.

It’s super easy to install too. You just attach the doorbell to the mounting bracket, and together as one unit, secure them both in place. The panels wrap nicely around your Ring Doorbell, keeping it continuously charged - even in low light conditions.

It would also be a great idea to get an anti-theft mount for your security cam. Since wire-free means it isn't internally attached to your home, there is an added risk of your camera being stolen. An anti-theft mount will keep it safe and secure.

Wire-free is the way to be

No matter which smart doorbell you decide on (I personally like the ones by Ring and Nest) there's no doubt that a wire-free setup is the way to go. You eliminate the pain of installation, save money by not hiring an electrician, and get the full experience of having a wire-free smart home - a truly smart home.
